Rainbow Studio Gallery, 5th Youth Art Competition-2022
Exhibition dates : December 3, 2022 – January 27, 2023

Awards and Juror’s comments

It was an absolute joy to review all of the 39 pieces of art in this year’s competition.
Unfortunately, we were required to select only 25 for this show.
We would like to congratulate all who entered their work, and encourage everyone to continue making their art
and entering it for exhibition.

As artist’s ourselves, we know how brave you are!
The caliber of work is exceptional and showcases the extremely talented youth and their teachers here
in the Halton area. Congratulations to Sungmi for the beautiful Rainbow Studio Gallery which showcases
local artists and fosters young people to develop their art practice.

Jurors’ criteria and comments: Overall when making our selections, we were looking for quality of
technique, such as consistent handling of the medium and composition, as well as originality and
interpretation of the theme.

All categories included

1 st prize
Best in Show - $200 Gift card
“Borderline” Jimin So
Captivating, dynamic, incredibly well-crafted and very original. The use of the
media and techniques is exceptional and fits the theme very well, Bravo!

Category grade 6-8
1 st Prize $100 Gift card
“Lost City” Jiyul Park:
Absolute originality of the subject matter, seems to have combined the
essence of the two themes. The quality of the portraiture is phenomenal, it is intriguing and really holds
the viewer’s attention. There’s a tension between the girl’s gaze and us, we are completely held captive!

2nd Prize
$50 Gift card
“Colourful Black + White” Sophia Louis
Most striking is the originality and the blending of the
colours. We love the monochromatic background with the rich jewel tones of the figure. The brushwork
is impeccable and good attention was paid to the negative spaces.

3 rd Prize
$50 Gift card
“Caterpillar’s Guest” Nisa Sevinc
We love the title, the use of primary colours, the composition,
the many patterns and the disproportion between Alice and the caterpillar. The black outline was an
excellent choice for this piece, well done!

Honorable Mention $50 Gift card
“Bizarre Food in Wonderland” Veronica Lee
Very clever use of 3D elements to
make the eye travel to all parts of the artwork. We liked how the blue shadows pop the clouds, it is a fun
and imaginative piece with a whimsical take on the theme.

Category gr 9-12

1 st Prize $100 Gift card
“After Lost Civilization” Cynthia Jiang
We were very impressed with the mastery of the paint
handling, and how the composition works from far and close. The light directs your eye around the
painting, the attention to the patina of the different material is superb and it tells a story. The detailed
depiction of the no parking sign, the bent school bus and the phone booth won us over!

2 nd Prize $50 Gift card
“Lost in Time” Jungah Kim

The movement in this piece is exceptional! We love the brushwork
in the buildings and the spiraling sense of depth. The way the story talks simultaneously of travelling
through time and loosing time is exceptional.

3 rd Prize $50 Gift card
“Unripe” June Kim

We admire the ambition of taking on such a large canvas. We love the
simultaneous depiction of the inside and the outside. There is a lot of symbolism and storytelling going
on and the lighting is magical. Very well done, enchanting!

Honorable Mention $50 Gift card
“Another World” Olivia Jung
We applaud the skillful handling of the watercolour.
The foreshortening and perspective are masterly. We really like the addition of contemporary elements
such as the key fob, the office chair and the outline of the watch. Lots of movement!

Category age 17-25

Merit Award $50 Gift card
“Adolescence” Zoe Lee

Adolescence as a world of its own, so much emotion and so many
tears! Interesting interpretation of the theme, great depiction of heartache, dreams and loss. The choice
of colours is exceptional, it complements the mood of the piece. The brushwork is juicy and masterly!

Merit Award $50 Gift card
“The Forgotten” Jessica Lui

The shadows are beautifully rendered and the light so well
distributed! A very strong composition, and a very successful perspective. Great depth is achieved with
the soft brush strokes of the muted tones in the back ground. There is a sense of mystery that keeps us
guessing as we try to piece the story together, very intriguing!
