About Artist
My background is in the study of western painting during my undergraduate degree, which I completed in Seoul, Korea. In 1986, I was enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts program at the Pratt Institute in New York, and subsequently moved to Toronto where I graduated from OCAD in 1990. Since then, most of my work has been focused on acrylic painting.
I believe that a work of art reflects the time and space an individual has experienced. It is in combining an individual’s experience with the purity and wonder of nature, that an artist can create anunanticipatedeffectand bring it to life on canvas. My deep desire is to communicate to viewers a sense of the grandeur and complexity of nature in a simplified formto be more personally relevant. My paintings reflect nature at its most primary stage where spaces are infinite and shapes are still full of potential. The aquatic forms seen on canvas are the result of a painting process techniquethat allows part of my own photographic work to be transferred. Using a technique of combining the gel medium with acrylic paint results in over layering, which creates rhythmic compositions, giving a sense of floating weightlessly inside the thick translucent colour.
This photo image of the colours and empty space of nature can allow the mystery and punctuated moments of wonder and curiosity to envelope the viewer. It is a glimpse into the individual importance of our existence as well as our ability to be transformed by mystery.
