Artist statment

My work’s title is “Spring” that lets us know the beginning.
Spring is coming after winter that was pinched with cold.
The warm sunlight, the soft breeze and the sprout all over the place suggest the nature are alive, which makes my heart flutter.

The Covid 19 virus has shrunk our body and mind and the world is becoming a desolate and deadly space. Like everyone else, I want to get back to the normal world where I could feel alive and energetic in full. The sound of chirping birds outside the window and the buds of spring give life to the world – that is now as quiet. I dedicated my effort to those works on the hope that the world will be in the end filled with laughter and vitality just like spring.

To express such an inner world in my mind, blank spaces are emphasized along with restrained use of lines in my works by using the unique material rather than complicated forms of beauty. The material used in my works is Dak, which is a main element of Korean traditional paper called Hanji.
Instead of a variety of colors, I intended to maximize the effect of texture by using the distinctive elasticity and hardness of Dak. It is a useful material to freely express bumpy texture since it is elastic in wet but hard once it dries. The relief effects made of Dak produce a diversity of shades that vary from the height and direction of the light.
Also, I intended to express Korean sentiments through spatial composition with marginal space.
