Juror’s Commentaries |
Jurors: Dominique Prévost and Vanessa Cress Lokos
It was indeed a beautiful sight to behold all 38 pieces of art that were entered into this year’s 6th Rainbow Studio Youth Art Competition!
Congratulations to all the artists who entered their work.
As artists we know how courageous you all are! We encourage you to keep creating and submitting to
shows, whether your piece is up this time or not. It was hard for us to keep only 20 artworks for this
exhibition, but that’s all the size of the gallery would allow. We chose a selection to represent each of the three categories.
Once again, this year, the caliber of the works that come out of the Rainbow Studio Gallery is
exceptional, and showcases the extremely talented students and their teachers here and in our region.
When making our selection, we were looking for a few things: Is there consistency in the technique, in
how the paint is handled? How about the use of colour? Is the composition working? Also important is
the originality and the interpretation of the theme. Does it hold the viewer’s attention? As you can see
there were many yeses to these questions and these pieces are worthy of our attention!
Congratulations again to all!

It was love at first sight! The composition is masterly; the large amount of negative space is very original,
with the jagged silhouette anchoring it, becoming a dance on its own! We really enjoyed the direction of
the light and how the trees and lamp posts are slanted to keep your eye from leaving the painting.
Simply gorgeous! |

Juror's comments
Incredible portraiture with a captivating sunshine halo around the head! The subtle modulation of the
greys used on the girl’s head paired with the loose, fresh and “unfinished” brushstrokes around it makes
the whole composition very dynamic! We thought the colour palette was very original, and ditto for
having the main subject backlit! |

The paint application is phenomenal! The angle of the perspective is very unusual, it makes one feels
like you are standing right there in the snow! We love how the background is painted loosely without
too many details, providing a lot of depth as your eye moved along the tree limbs, the shadows and the
figure sitting on the stump. The gradation of the sky with its many shades of blue is cleverly repeated in
the snow. We are both in awe of this young artist, wise beyond her years! |

Juror's comments
Great colours, very rich and well applied. We really enjoyed all the collaged elements! The side view
mirror on the bottom left adds depth and psychological weight to the painting. It makes you questions
who is looking at whom within the composition, very clever!

Juror's comments
The three bands composition works well and the colours are very harmonious! The quiet foreground
provides room for each of the little ballerina to hold their own personalities and expressions. It is also
very interesting that the line-up of girls expands beyond the frame; and that the elements on the
window sills guide your eye from indoor to outdoor where graceful trees glow. |

Juror's comments
Very original fairy tale with frames within the frame! Beautiful storytelling where each detail is
exquisitely painted. Whimsical and imaginative, what fun to have a fork, a watch and some postage
stamps to give you a sense of the mouse’s scale! There is so much going on, it’s just marvelous! The
frame on the left depicting joyful exteriors and the one on the right a more intimate interior. Well done! |

Tomorrow x Together
16x20
Acrylic paint on Canvas
$300
My artwork is my favorite picture of the artist's Instagram photo. His name is Yeonjun from Tomorrow by Together. So, my inspiration was my bias (Yeonjun). Also, I liked that picture. It was a windy day in the cities where he took the picture. The first thing I did in my art was to paint my background, which is grey, and then the ocean/water, which is turquoise or blue. Then I painted the city with lights— behind Yeonjun and, after that, the rales with red tape. Then, my last part is Yeonjun with his hair, skin tone, and brown hoody.

It’s supposed to be about how the Korean pine tree (so-na-moo) might stay. It also means to appreciate it while it lasts because it might not be how you like it now. I always loved trees and I incorporated a variety in my painting. I love strange scenes and this fitted it perfectly, I kept on changing and adding ideas but in the end I thought it was beautiful. |

Wonderful painting! We love how the water is painted with the light shining on it coming off the bridge
on the left. We are taken by the intensity of the stare, wondering what are they looking at, probably a
beautiful sight! |

So much movement, this artist has a dancing brush that is really fresh and free. It fits the theme very
well, definitely a fun, beautiful scene! |

Gorgeous palette of saturated colours. A very original composition, the circular motion keeps your
attention in a dream like state. We were taken by the finesse of the patterning of the light, how it circled
the moon, then glided along the edges of the waves, genius! |
